The Concept
The concept for the Coxswain's Locker was developed in 1990 when Joe Keeley in his senior year of coxing the men's heavyweight program at the University of Pennsylvania realized that coxswains had few sources of information available beyond 3 or 4 page magazine articles. Based upon a two page outline written on a long airplane flight in the summer of 1990, the original Coxswain's Manual was written and produced in thirteen months from March 1992 to April 1993.
Our History
The Coxswain's Manual was first released in May 1993 and sold out within a year proving the need for coxing educational products. The Manual was immediately replaced with a second edition that sold out in early 1997. The third edition of the Coxswain's Manual was released in November 1998. Our product line also includes The Coxswain's Drill Card and two companion videos released in 1994:
About Joe Keeley
Joe began coxing in 1986 for Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts. Asked by some rather large seniors what sport he wanted to try out for, the 85-pound future coxswain thought that whatever sport made these guys so big had to be for him. Disappointed that this was not to be the case, Joe realized that he enjoyed coxing becoming more proficient every year. Although coxing at Tabor didn't bring too many championships, several 2nd or 3rd places and a short trip to the Henley Royal Regatta whetted his appetite for more.
Joe began coxing for the University of Pennslvania Men's Heavyweight program on Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row under coaches Larry Connell and Stan Bergman in the fall of 1986. After an auspicious begining of his college career when he missed his very first 2000 meter collegiate sprint race in April 1997 due to chicken pox, Joe completed an undefeated 33-0 season in 1987, a 43-1 Junior Varsity season in 1989, and a 36-5 Varsity season in 1990. Joe's sprint awards include a gold medal from the 1987 Heavyweight Freshman Eastern Sprints and IRA Regattas, a gold medal from the 1989 JV Eastern Sprints and IRA Regattas, and a bronze medal from the 1990 IRA. Joe’s head race awards include medals from the Head of the Charles and Head of the Schuylkill Regattas. Joe also won a gold medal at the Canadian Henley in 1997.
